Park and text zones on the side of the road. I really don't know how I feel about them besides seeing them as a sure sign that civilisation is going down the toilet.

The general idea is kinda cute, but I don't think that people stupid enough to text while driving will be using them. And, on a side note, stopping next to fast moving, multi lane traffic without a real emergency is quite dangerous and therefore illegal in several countries.

I don't know what's worse, people plowing into each other while texting and driving or people getting mowed over by 18-wheelers with overworked drivers.

Those mentioned areas are completely off of the highway area so no danger of getting hit while on the shoulder. However, idiots are still going to text because they don't want wait to stop to do it.

And in other news, New York state has officially changed its motto from "The Empire State" to "The Nanny State."

Why not? Probably nothing more than new signs for existing commuter lots. If it gets someone's attention and gets them off the road to text, what is the problem?

Isn't that just a rest stop? With toilets and maybe a vending machine?

Also illegal in several countries: Chewing gum, being an unaccompanied woman outdoors.

It's only dangerous if the people on the highway can't stay there.

Keep in mind that this is intended for people in Camrys who could care less about driving.

I seriously don't understand texting, I hate to do it. Much to the annoyance of my friends, I usually give them a call every time they send me a text. I'd rather talk to the other person, than write a 100 words to convey something..

This upstate NY and it will probably will be safe, but in NYC there would be a line of muggers waiting to steal your iphone.

Start imposing harsh, overly-harsh penalties like 1 week license suspension or better yet - police show up at your house, remove the plates from your car for a week. Allow citizens to supply evidence of such things to enable prosecution against it. If penalties were harsh enough and people were allowed to submit evidence against you I think texting while driving would end pretty abruptly.

I realize taking a picture of someone texting while you are both driving is not really a better solution but it would cut down on the texting, once you have cleared that up there won't be such an issue with it.

Not just in NY. I've spotted these on the Dutch highway. I don't think you'll need a translation.

Yes. And the state felt the need to spend a bunch of money on signs that remind you that you're allowed to use your phone while not driving, and that rest areas are places where you can stop driving for a bit, because the existing rest stop signs didn't convey that message.

These are only being put up at existing rest areas, so nobody is stopping in the emergency lane next to fast moving traffic.

How else is New York State supposed to waste their money? By helping people? That's crazy talk!

You're also not visually and mentally distracted with those rules... so those are ridiculous. Texting and driving, much more so.

I do not quite follow...

I was referring to Klaus' comment about pulling to the side of the road being very dangerous. I totally agree that texting and driving is quite dangerous.
